چکیده

In this work we study L-band and X-band interferometric phase center location in boreal forest in order to assist height retrieval with POLinSAR methods. We complement interferometric L-band and X-band dataset with an accurate LIDAR measured terrain and canopy height model. The LIDAR measured model allows to calculate ground and treetop phase estimates and reveal the radar measured phase center location inside the canopy We show that for X-band, the interferometric phase center is mostly in the upper quarter of the canopy as predicted by Random Volume over Ground model, indicating that ground is not visible but attenuation is still rather low. We show that tree height estimation is feasible with one polarization X-band (TanDEM-X ) interferometry with simple methods when an accurate digital terrain model is available. At Lband the phase center is around half way of the canopy height and often lower, indicating that ground contribution is significant and attenuation is low. The phase center height follows well the treetop line, except for sparse forest.

Three-stage inversion improvement for forest height estimation using dual-PolInSAR data

This paper addresses an algorithm for forest height estimation using single frequency single baseline dual polarization radar interferometry data. The proposed method is based on a physical two layer volume over ground model and is represented using polarimetric synthetic aperture radar interferometry (PolInSAR) technique. The presented algorithm provides the opportunity to take advantages of t...

Improvement of Biomass Estimation in Forest Areas based on Polarimetric Parameters Optimization of SETHI airborne Data using Particle Swarm Optimization Method

Estimation of forest biomass has received much attention in recent decades. Airborne and spaceborne (SAR) have a great potential to quantify biomass and structural diversity because of its penetration capability. Polarizations are important elements in SAR systems due to sensitivity of them to backscattering mechanisms and can be useful to estimate biomass. Full Polarimetric Synthetic Aperture ...

The 20090-2010 Uavsar Campaign to Map Vegetation 3d Structure and Biomass

We present the results of the 2009-2010 UAVSAR campaigns over boreal, temperate and tropical forests. UAVSAR is a new L-band fully polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (inSAR) capable of repeat pass interferometry (Figure 1)[1]. Our objective is to estimate vegetation 3D structure and biomass using polarimetric backscatter, repeat-pass inSAR, lidar and ancillary data (e.g. land cover maps, cli...

Forest Height Estimates for Boreal Forest Using L- and X-band Polinsar and Hutscat Scatterometer

In this paper we present a airborne polarimetric interferometric SAR measurement campaign, carried out in Finland in 2003. The main aim of the FinSAR campaign was to validate POLinSAR tree height retrieval algorithms for boreal forest and it was arranged jointly by Helsinki University of Technology (TKK) and German Aerospace Center (DLR) Microwaves and Radar Institute. During the campaign airbo...
